LAS VEGAS (AP) — Tourism officials expect 332,000 people to crowd the traffic-free Strip and squeeze underneath Fremont Street's massive video canopy tonight. It'll be a near-freezing New Year's Eve come midnight. The National Weather Service forecasts temperatures dropping from the mid-40s to mid-30s by 2016's arrival.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada officials investigating an October explosion at a long-closed radioactive waste dump northwest of Las Vegas are moving to study how to prevent another blast. The State Public Safety Chief says the fire marshal's final report that rainwater seeping into corroded 1970s-era barrels caused the explosion at the site near Beatty ends the police investigation. He says officials now have to determine whether blame should be placed, and what corrective action is needed.

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Reno middle school is reopening two weeks later than scheduled because of extensive flood damage. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that the Washoe County School District says classes at Pine Middle School will resume on Jan. 25. Each school day will be increased by 15 minutes until spring break starts on March 18. The district says a pipe broke above the school's cafeteria and caused almost the entire first floor to flood.

MOUNTAIN SPRINGS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities are investigating after a body was found along a highway near Mountain Springs. The body was found along State Route 160 at mile marker 22. A Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper says the death appears to be unrelated to a traffic incident. Las Vegas police are handling the investigation.
