ATLANTA (AP) — Officials overseeing the sale of Turner Field say the property will go to Georgia State University and a real estate firm.
The City of Atlanta and the Fulton County Recreation Authority announced the sale of the stadium and 70 acres of surrounding property on Monday. The university and private developers previously discussed plans for a 30,000-seat football stadium and other university facilities, along with mixed-use space including housing and retail.
Few details of the sale were immediately released. The recreation authority's executive director Keisha Lance Bottoms says an agreement still is being developed. She says the project is the right fit for the property and surrounding neighborhoods.
The Atlanta Braves have begun construction of new stadium in Cobb County and plan to open the team's 2017 season there.
