SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a 5-year-old girl was hit and killed by a pickup truck after she let go of her mother's hand outside a Lehi preschool.

Fire Chief Jeremy Craft says the student was leaving Mountainland Head Start on Thursday afternoon when was accidently hit by someone picking up a kindergarten student.

Craft says the girl was with her mother and sister before she darted into the path of the truck about noon.

The child was taken to a local hospital where she died of her injuries. Her name was not immediately released.

Craft says that police are investigating, but it appears to be a low-speed accident.

Lehi is about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City.
