WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter says the U.S. is prepared to assist the Iraqi army with more personnel and equipment to help them fight Islamic State militants. Carter told the Senate Armed Services Committee the U.S. would provide attack helicopters and additional military advisers in the fight to retake Ramadi, a key city in western Iraq.
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has apologized for the 2014 killing of a black teenager who was shot 16 times by a white police officer. In a speech before the City Council, Emanuel said Chicago's police force needs "complete and total reform." Emanuel also said that the reforms must go beyond the police department and that Chicago needs to — quote — "reset our values."
BALTIMORE (AP) — Defense attorneys have called a forensic pathologist as their first witness in the manslaughter trial of a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray. Gray was a 25-year-old black man who died after suffering a spinal injury in the back of a police transport van.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Transportation says landslides and high water have closed parts of many state highways. Some of the hardest-hit areas were near the Oregon Coast, which was hammered overnight by heavy rain that has inundated the Pacific Northwest in recent days. Strong winds have knocked out power to many homes in the region.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Wholesale businesses trimmed their stockpiles slightly in October while sales were flat, possible signs of modest growth this quarter. The Commerce Department says wholesale inventories slipped 0.1 percent following a 0.2 percent rise in September. Sales were unchanged in October after a 0.5 percent increase a month earlier.
