SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — The Islamic State group's official radio station is describing the couple believed responsible for the San Bernardino shootings as "supporters," but it's not calling them members or IS fighters. The group isn't claiming responsibility, but the Al-Bayan report today is singing the praises of Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik.
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Times is taking a stand on gun legislation in a big way. For the first time in 95 years, space on the front page is devoted to an editorial calling for greater gun regulation in the wake of recent deadly mass shootings. Publisher Arthur Sulzberger Jr. says the newspaper is trying to "deliver a strong and visible statement."
PARIS (AP) — Some scientists are thinking the unthinkable about climate change -- a possible last resort that sounds like a sci-fi move scenario. It's called geoengineering. It would essentially involve polluting the planet on purpose to try to counteract man-made warming. And it's part of a discussion about what happens if other actions fail and the environment gets dangerous. Meanwhile, negotiators have adopted a draft of a global agreement to fight climate change and passed it on to environment and foreign ministers to work out the remaining points of dispute.
CHICAGO (AP) — In Chicago, the documents say one thing while the video says another. Police officer statements released in Chicago say a 17-year-old old with a knife advanced on police before he was shot 16 times. The video shows Laquan McDonald veering away from officers down a four-lane street in October 2014 before he was fatally shot. Days of protests followed the release of the video. One officer is charged with murder.
BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) — There aren't many signs of the Christmas spirit in Bethlehem even though the holiday is just weeks away. Gloom has descended over the biblical town in the wake of continuing Israeli-Palestinian violence. Reservations from foreign tourists are way down.
