CHICAGO (AP) — The fallout from the release of a video of a fatal shooting by a Chicago police officer is widening. Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy was fired today by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has asked the Department of Justice to investigate whether the Chicago Police Department's practices violate federal and constitutional law. Madigan says trust in the police department is "broken." The video shows a white officer shooting a black 17-year-old 16 times.
WASHINGTON (AP) — According to a U.S. official, a special ops force being sent to Iraq could total up to a couple hundred troops, including the assault teams and aviation units. It would likely be based in Northern Iraq and will help target the Islamic State group. Polling after the attacks in Paris and Beirut finds Americans divided over sending U.S. ground troops to fight IS. A Gallup survey said 47 percent of Americans favored sending more ground troops to Iraq and Syria and 46 percent were opposed.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Russia's U.N. ambassador says his country hopes to circulate a draft resolution to the Security Council very soon that will tighten the U.N. crackdown on the financing of extremist groups including the Islamic State group. Vitaly Churkin told The Associated Press that the resolution is aimed at halting illicit oil sales, trading in antiquities, and ransom payments for hostages that are key methods used by extremist groups to finance their operations.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — An ex-wife of the man accused of killing three people at a Colorado Planned Parenthood says he targeted another of the organization's clinics before. Barbara Mescher Michaux told NBC News that Robert Dear put glue in the locks of another Planned Parenthood clinic when they were married more than 20 years ago. Officials said Dear gave a rambling statement that included the words "no more baby parts."
WASHINGTON (AP) — Lots of Americans wanted more bang for their bucks on Black Friday. The FBI says it processed a record 185,000 firearms background checks on Friday. FBI background checks are required for gun purchases from federally licensed gun dealers and for permits to carry guns. The record volume came on the same day that three people were killed and nine others wounded in shooting at a Planned Parenthood office in Colorado.
