NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — The University of Connecticut is expanding its role in the New Haven Promise college scholarship program.
The school says it will add a $5,000 supplement to students who attend UConn on the Promise scholarships beginning next fall.
New Haven Promise, funded in by Yale University, already provides full tuition to qualified students from New Haven to attend any two- or four-year college in Connecticut.
To qualify, students must have at least a 3.0 grade-point average, and good attendance, public service and disciplinary records.
UConn President Susan Herbst says the Promise students can use the additional money for other expenses, including books and room and board.
Since 2010, about 1,000 New Haven public school graduates have qualified for the Promise program, including 132 who currently attend UConn.
