SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A West Valley City man accused of killing his fiancée 19 years ago on the day before their wedding is set to be sentenced today Billy Justin Charles pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge in August, after an appeals court tossed out a 2009 guilty verdict in the case. Jamie Ellen Weiss's body was found in an overflowing bathtub.
BILOXI, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Highway Patrol says a FedEx driver from Utah was seriously injured when his truck overturned on Interstate 10. Troopers say Dwight Miska of West Jordan was taken to a hospital in Louisiana, after his truck overturned yesterday morning.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One of the nation's six canine blood banks is located in Salt Lake City, and it's calling on dog owners in the area for help. KSL-TV reports that dog blood is in high demand at veterinary clinics, and there's currently a nationwide shortage. Advanced Veterinary Care is calling on Utah pet owners to help fulfill the need. Dobermans, greyhounds, boxers and pit bulls are ideal donors -- they have a universal blood type.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah's growing alcohol sales mean more funds for a campaign focused on parents' roles in preventing underage drinking. The Salt Lake Tribune reports an estimated $2.2 million will support ParentsEmpowered.org in 2016. Funding has increased steadily from $1.7 million in 2012, when lawmakers mandated a portion of revenue from liquor sales would support prevention efforts.
