BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho lawmaker is calling for a special session of the state Legislature to address refugee resettlement. The Spokesman-Review reports that Rep. Heather Scott didn't say why she wanted the state to address refugee resettlement, which is a federal program. But her request comes as some are expressing concern about Syrian refugees in the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks.

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — About 1,000 protesters and counter-protesters on opposite sides of the Syrian refugee resettlement issue demonstrated in front of the Idaho State Capitol in Boise on Saturday. Boise Police estimated the crowd on the pro-refugee side on the steps of the Capital at about 700, and counter protesters across Jefferson Street at about 300. Each side carried hand-lettered signs, with the pro-refugee group's signs saying "Refugees Still Welcome" and "Idaho Is Too Great For Hate."

LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) — Officials are considering a controversial proposal to swap federal land for private timberland in the upper Lochsa River basin. The Lewiston Tribune reports Republican Sen. Jim Risch is holding a meeting in Grangeville tomorrow to discuss the proposal. Under the plan, Western Pacific Timber Co. would offer 39,000 acres of land in the upper Lochsa River basin in exchange for U.S. Forest Service land of similar value.

NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — A young Caldwell man's request for a new trial after being found guilty of voluntary manslaughter has been denied. The Idaho Press-Tribune reports that a judge last week denied the request by 19-year-old Jacob Hernandez. His sentencing is set for tomorrow. Hernandez was found guilty in the Christmas Eve fatal stabbing of Ricardo Sedano.
