BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — At least 20 (new figure) victims, including one American, are reported to have died in the hotel attack in Mali that was carried out by heavily armed Islamic extremists. The attackers seized dozens of hostages on Friday, but Malian troops, backed by U.S. and French special forces, swarmed in to retake the building and free many of the terrified captives.
PARIS (AP) — It was one week ago that terrorists carried out coordinated attacks in Paris, killing 130 people. Today, shell-shocked Parisians honored the 130 victims with candles and songs. Meanwhile, at the United Nations, the Security Council unanimously approved a French-sponsored resolution calling on all nations to redouble efforts to prevent further terror attacks.
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — In central and eastern Iowa, road conditions are deteriorating because of snow and ice. Six to 10 inches are expected. The first significant wintry storm of the season is forecast to bring up to a foot of snow to parts of the Midwest. Iowa and northern Illinois are bracing for some of the largest totals.
HOUSTON (AP) — A Houston-area man has been found guilty of murder for killing his neighbor during an argument over loud music. The jury deliberated two hours before rejecting Raul Rodriguez's self-defense claim under Texas' "stand your ground" law. Rodriguez was convicted in the 2010 death of elementary school teacher Kelly Danaher, who was having a party at his house.
DETROIT (AP) — The United Auto Workers union has approved its contract with General Motors after addressing the objections of some workers. Production workers ratified the agreement earlier this month by a 55.4 percent majority. But skilled trades workers like electricians and pipefitters rejected it, which sent negotiators back to the table.
