SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is ordering a review of security checks for refugees coming to Utah on the heels of the last week's attacks in Paris.
The Republican governor said in a statement Monday that he wants state and federal authorities to reevaluate how they screen refugees.
He stopped short of joining several governors who are threatening to stop accepting Syrian refugees following last week's attacks in Paris, even as experts counter they lack legal authority to block the relocations.
Herbert said he wants to help those fleeing violence but that public safety is the top priority.
The concerns stem from the discovery of a Syrian passport founder near one of the attackers in Friday's deadly attacks in Paris.
President Barack Obama argued Monday that the United States needs to allow Syrian refugees because many are fleeing terrorism.
