SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — One of the largest Boy Scout councils in the country is laying off employees because donations are down, possibly a side effect of this summer's tension between the Scouts and the Mormon church.

The Utah National Parks Council, which serves Scouts south of Salt Lake County, is about halfway through its fall fundraising drive. Council president Stan Lockhart says preliminary data shows a substantial drop in donations.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the nation's largest sponsor of Boy Scout units. The church said it was troubled with the July decision to rescind a national ban on gay Scout leaders, but ultimately decided to stay with the Scouts.

Lockhart believes that ambivalence confused some people. He says more than 99 percent of troops in his council are chartered by the church.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Up to $10 million in state money may go toward improving the buildings and facilities at the Utah State Fair grounds.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports a panel of state lawmakers endorsed keeping the fair at its State Fairpark grounds and renewing the Fair Board's lease.

These endorsements will be sent to a top legislative budget committee, opening the issue up for more debate after the Legislature reconvenes in January.

Some say the lease should be renewed without delay, though that process has been waylaid by financial concerns and other issues.

Salt Lake County's fair and the Days of '47 Rodeo may soon move to the fairgrounds. Rodeo chairman Kem Gardner said a 10,000-seat arena would need to be built in place of the 3,600-seat bowl currently in place.

BEAVER, Utah (AP) — Three people were hospitalized following a collision between a semi truck and a passenger vehicle in Beaver.

KUTV in Salt Lake City reports that the incident happened on I-15 around 6 a.m. Saturday when the driver of the semi allegedly fell asleep.

Authorities say the truck drifted to the left and the driver woke up and over-corrected, leading to the semi rolling onto its side.

They say a car passing from the opposite side didn't see the truck in time and collided with the bottom of the semi.

Both the driver and passenger in the semi and the driver of the other car were taken to a Beaver hospital.

But all three were released a short time later with minor injuries.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Backup quarterback Jerrard Randall threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nate Phillips on the first play of the second overtime — his only completion of the game — and Arizona stunned No. 10 Utah 37-30 on Saturday night.

The loss knocked the Utes (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) into a first-place tie with USC in the Pac-12 South, and the Trojans hold the tiebreaker because they beat Utah. UCLA was a half-game back and was playing Washington State later Saturday night.

Anu Solomon passed for 277 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a season-high 86 yards for Arizona (6-5, 3-5) before leaving the game after a helmet-to-helmet hit with 9:25 left in regulation. No penalty was called.

Utah's Devontae Booker carried 34 times for 143 yards.

Both of the Pac-12 one-loss teams went down to a second defeat. Oregon beat No. 7 Stanford 38-36 earlier Saturday.
