NEW YORK (AP) — Investigators at the scene of what was thought to be a fatal shooting in New York City made a startling discovery when they found the victim was still alive.
Emergency medical workers responding to a shooting in Queens on Thursday morning initially pronounced the 32-year-old woman dead with a gunshot wound to the head.
But police officers heard sounds from the woman, who was taken to Jamaica Hospital in critical condition about an hour later.
A spokesman for the hospital says the woman died later Thursday.
Police say the woman apparently shot herself. A spokeswoman for the city's medical examiner says the death has been ruled a suicide.
