BERLIN (AP) — Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt, who guided his country through economic turbulence and Cold War tension in the 1970s and early 1980s, has died. He was 96. His doctor tells the German news agency dpa that Schmidt died today in Hamburg. The center-left Social Democrat led West Germany from 1974 to 1982, when he lost power to conservative Helmut Kohl.

MADRID (AP) — Legendary New Orleans musician and composer Allen Toussaint has died in Madrid after suffering a heart attack following a concert. Rescue workers were called to Toussaint's hotel early today and managed to revive him. But he stopped breathing during the ambulance ride to a hospital, and efforts to revive him again were unsuccessful. Toussaint was 77.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Football practice is to resume today at the University of Missouri's Columbia campus ahead of Saturday's game against Brigham Young. It was a boycott by the players that played a big role in protests by students who charged not enough was being done to combat racism. The protests culminated in the resignations of the school system president and the campus chancellor.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is poised to pass a bill that would ban moving Guantanamo Bay detainees to the United States. The Senate plans to vote on a $607 billion defense policy bill passed by the House last week containing the Guantanamo provision. President Barack Obama has been seeking to close the military prison ever since he took office.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli police say security forces have foiled three attempted Palestinian stabbing attacks. They included an assault on a train in east Jerusalem carried out by two young boys. One alleged attacker was shot and killed while two suspected assailants, including a preteen boy, were wounded. An Israeli security guard also sustained moderate injuries.
