HOUSTON (AP) — The University of Texas System has revealed plans to expand its presence in Houston with a new research center.
System Chancellor William McRaven said Thursday that he will convene a task force early next year to plan the center's mission.
For now, the system is buying 300 acres of southwestern Houston to serve as the center site. System Regents Chairman Paul Foster tells the Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1HdHM6M) that rather than being an independent campus, the center will provide research opportunities for other institutions in the UT System.
The site is about 3.5 miles south of the Texas Medical Center, which is home to the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
