ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. (AP) — Residents of an Illinois town that celebrated a police officer as a hero after his death say they're upset to learn that he killed himself after embezzling money from a youth program he oversaw. One woman says residents of Fox Lake are taking down posters they had put up to honor Lt. Charles Gliniewicz (GLIHN'-uh-wihts). And some even want to get back money they donated to support his family. Investigators said today that Gliniewicz elaborately staged the scene to make it appear he had been slain while pursuing suspects.
MERCED, Calif. (AP) — Officials say an attacker who stabbed five people at the University of California, Merced, before being shot and killed by police was a male student. But they say his identity hasn't been confirmed. Two victims were airlifted to hospitals. Officials say three others had injuries minor enough for treatment on campus. A student government representative says he has been told by numerous students that the stabbings started inside a classroom and continued outside before campus police shot and killed the attacker.
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Egypt confirms that the voice recorder of the Russian plane that crashed in the Sinai Peninsula is damaged. The country's aviation ministry describes it as "partially damaged" and adds that "a lot of work is required" in order to get any information from it. Russian officials earlier today said the voice recorder had suffered serious damage. There's been no comment from Egyptian officials on the British government's suggestion that the aircraft may have been brought down by a bomb. Britain has suspended all flights to and from Sinai as a precaution.
FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Volkswagen is again feeling the fallout from its emissions scandal. The credit ratings agency Moody's has downgraded the company's debt, because of the possible financial impact of the scandal. VW announced yesterday that it had uncovered irregularities in carbon dioxide emissions levels. Moody's also cited Monday's announcement that the software that was used to defeat U.S. emissions testing had been found on more models than originally thought.
PHOENIX (AP) — A suburban Phoenix high school football player who says he was suspended for praising God will get to play in his team's playoff game. Officials have reversed the one-game suspension handed to 17-year-old Pedro Banda, allowing him to participate in the team's first playoff appearance in 21 years. A senior at Dysart High School in El Mirage, Banda was ejected Friday at a game in Glendale after he scored a touchdown and pointed to the sky in the end zone. Officials say it was his second instance of excessive celebration in the game. The teen says he wasn't taunting but thanking God. And officials now say they'll give him "the benefit of the doubt."
