Ex-teacher accused of sexual assault dating back to 1970s

STATESVILLE, S.C. (AP) — Authorities in Iredell County have accused a former special education teacher with sexual assault.

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office told local media outlets that 65-year-old Allen Sloop Lowrance is charged with 20 counts of second-degree sex offense.

Lowrance is free on a $50,000 bond. It's not clear whether he has an attorney.

The sheriff's officesays it was contacted last month by a former student of Lowrance who said they had been abused in the 1970s at South Iredell High. According to the sheriff's office, Lowrance was a special education teacher at South Iredell High between 1974 and 1977.

During an investigation, the sheriff's office said the victim disclosed information about "new incidents of sexual abuse by Lowrance" between last December and October. Those incidents that led to the charges.
