BERLIN (AP) — Volkswagen says an internal investigation has revealed "unexplained inconsistencies" in the carbon dioxide emissions from 800,000 of its vehicles. VW says the development could cost the company more than $2 billion. The German automaker is already reeling from the fallout of a scandal over cars with diesel engines that were equipped to cheat on emissions tests.
TORONTO (AP) — The head of the Canadian company behind the proposed Keystone XL pipeline is denying a political motive. TransCanada wants the U.S. government to delay consideration of the project. The delay, if granted, would put off any decision until the next U.S. president takes office in 2017. Many anticipate President Barack Obama will reject the pipeline, which Republican candidates support.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats have blocked a Senate bill that would have forced the Obama administration to withdraw new federal rules to protect smaller streams, tributaries and wetlands from development and pollution. Supporters of the legislation did not get the 60 votes needed to stop debate and consider the bill. The vote was 57-41, meaning Democrats have stopped the bill, for now.
