SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Investigators are trying to determine what caused a van to hit and kill a 14-year-old girl who was in costume while trick-or-treating at a crosswalk in Taylorsville on Halloween. A West Valley City police spokeswoman says investigators don't believe the woman driving of the van was impaired, speeding or distracted. The woman has been cooperative. Charges are pending the results of the investigation.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police in central Utah are investigating after a body washed up on along the Green River. Authorities say a man boating on the river spotted the badly decomposed body on the west bank on Oct. 29. Emery County Sheriff's Deputies say the person appears to have been a woman between the ages of 50 and 65, but little more is known about who she was or how she died.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A man who used personal information of dead people to file bogus tax returns has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison. The Deseret News reports that Moussa Sleiman Bitar pleaded guilty to three counts of fraud last week. The judge in Utah ordered Bitar to pay $844,000 in restitution.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Salt Lake City set a new heat record for October by averaging 60.5 degrees for the month. The National Weather Service says the balmy fall weather broke the old record set in 1988, when the average temperature was 60. A daily heat record was set on Oct. 14, with a high of 82.
