BOSTON (AP) — Northeastern University says it will open a campus in Toronto in 2016, its fourth regional campus but the school's first outside the U.S.

The Toronto campus will join others the Boston school has opened in Seattle, Charlotte and in Silicon Valley in recent years. The new campus will offer graduate programs geared to meet the needs of employers in Toronto, including project management and the medical industry.

Northeastern's president said in a statement that the school chose Toronto because of its culture of innovation and increased demand for a skilled workforce. Toronto's mayor said in a statement that he welcomes Northeastern to the city.

The university of about 20,000 students said it chose Toronto as part of a three-year process to find a location for its first international campus.
