WASHINGTON (AP) — The Smithsonian Institution has implemented a new lactation policy after complaints from employees who said they lacked private rooms where they could pump breast milk while at work.
The American Civil Liberties Union says the Smithsonian sent a letter on Wednesday detailing the new policy. The Smithsonian told the ACLU that lactation rooms will be identified and available for use by Nov. 30.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, a Democrat who represents the District of Columbia in Congress, also praised the Smithsonian for taking quick action to accommodate nursing mothers as required by law.
The ACLU said in a letter to the Smithsonian earlier this month that only two of the institution's buildings have lactation rooms. It said workers had been forced to use restrooms and expose their breasts to co-workers.
