HAMPTON, Ark. (AP) — Police say a 3-year-old girl has died after being found unresponsive in a washing machine in southern Arkansas.

The Arkansas State Police confirmed Thursday that authorities were investigating the child's death.

Agency spokesman Bill Sadler said Hampton police were called to a local home around 1:40 p.m. on Wednesday. Sadler didn't say who found the girl, but said she was found unresponsive inside the machine and was pronounced dead at an El Dorado hospital about an hour later.

Hampton Police Chief Cole Knoedl released a statement saying authorities have yet to determine if charges will be filed. He says the Arkansas State Crime Lab will perform an autopsy. Knoedl also declined to say who found the girl.

Hampton is 90 miles south of Little Rock.
