ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — The French sailor who made a daring leap from a disabled sailboat to a waiting rescue ship said he wasn't frightened.
Instead, Emmanuel Wattecamps-Etienne told an Associated Press reporter through Facebook Messenger that he had to wait for the right moment to make the leap since he knew he wouldn't have a second chance.
The jump was caught on Coast Guard video and shared around the world. Almost as famous as Wattecamps-Etienne is his cat, Pip. He tucked his cat inside his coat before jumping to the waiting rescue ship.
He plans to return with Pip to France and hitchhike around the country, looking for an aluminum hull that they can use to return to the sea.
