PARIS (AP) — At least 42 people are dead after a bus transporting retirees on a day trip collided with a truck on a country road in French wine country. The local mayor tells RTL radio that the truck driver lost control of the vehicle and struck the bus, and both vehicles quickly caught fire. He says the bus driver was able to open the door, but only eight people escaped.

MIAMI (AP) — The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Patricia is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Western hemisphere. The Category 5 storm is headed toward Mexico's Pacific coast. Then parts of Texas could feel its effects. Hurricane specialist Dave Roberts says the storm is the strongest one they've seen in the eastern Pacific or in the Atlantic with maximum sustained winds near 200 mph.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Police in Tennessee say a fight over a dice game has left one man dead and three women wounded in a shooting on the Tennessee State University campus. Police say the 19-year-old who died last night was not a university student. It's not known whether the shooter, who fled the scene, was a student. Police describe the three women shot as "innocent passers-by." The shooting happened in a courtyard.

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — Thousands of South African university students are converging at the country's main government complex today to protest tuition increases. It's the largest demonstration in more than a week of protests and among the biggest since South Africa rejected white minority rule. Many students accuse the government of not doing enough to support university students and their families who are struggling to pay bills. One Johannesburg school already has decided to drop plans for a 10.5 percent tuition hike.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A Taiwanese woman who gave birth on a flight to the U.S. could face a hefty bill for forcing the plane to divert to Alaska. Taiwanese media have widely reported that the woman was trying to deliver her baby in the U.S., so it would be a U.S. citizen, and repeatedly asked the cabin crew, "Are we in U.S. air space?" The insurance firm of China Airlines will decide whether to ask the unnamed passenger to cover the cost of the stopover. Alaska state officials say the baby is eligible for U.S. citizenship.
