MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — A Montpelier kindergarten and first-grade teacher is the Vermont's 2016 teacher of the year.

Susan Koch is a teacher at Union Elementary School.

The Vermont Agency of Education said Tuesday that Koch has encouraged and developed an outdoor education program that has been extended to all grades at the school. Students are given the chance to learn in a natural setting through the school year.

As teacher of the year, Koch will visit schools and work with teachers around the state. She will also travel to Washington, D.C. this spring for a White House ceremony and is the state's candidate for national teacher of the year.
