LOS ANGELES (AP) — Crews in Southern California have pulled dozens of stranded cars and trucks free and reopened some roads that were buried in tons of mud during flash flooding. Los Angeles County crews reopened stretches of five roads in mountain communities about 40 miles north of Los Angeles.
BASTROP, Texas (AP) — Firefighters have contained about 60 percent of a Central Texas wildfire, although their progress was threatened by higher winds and lower humidity. Some 275 firefighters were assisted by at least seven aircraft dumping water and fire retardant on the Hidden Pines Fire about 40 miles southeast of Austin.
GRANBURY, Texas (AP) — Authorities in Texas are investigating after a car veered into a motorcycle on a rural road north of Granbury. The incident left two people injured and was captured on video. The driver of the motorcycle contends the car's driver swerved intentionally.
DETROIT (AP) — Detroit police say the pastor of a storefront church shot and killed a man who tried to attack him during a service. Assistant Detroit Police Chief Steve Dolunt tells the Detroit News and Detroit Free Press the man and the pastor had prior "issues."
BEIJING (AP) — China's economy expanded 6.9 percent in the third quarter, its slowest quarterly growth since early 2009. The latest quarter was a slight slowdown from 7 percent growth in the second quarter. The Beijing government has cut interest rates five times since last November in an effort to shore up growth.
