WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) — Trap shooting will become a sport at Wahpeton High School in the spring.
The Wahpeton School Board agreed to add trap shooting to the list of spring sports at the request of activities director Mike McCall, the Wahpeton Daily News (http://bit.ly/1LduTs9 ) reported. Participation will be open to male and female students in ninth through 12th grade and all of them must obtain a North Dakota Hunter Education certificate. All shooting must take place at a gun range.
McCall told the board that he's noticed an increase in trap shooting programs and requests for them in schools throughout North Dakota and the Midwest.
"It's something that I think is growing, with the amount of hunting that goes on in this part of the state," McCall said of trap shooting's popularity.
A gun and archery club in Breckenridge, Minnesota, was recommended as a shooting spot, McCall said, as its gun safes were deemed helpful in upholding the school's weapons policy. McCall said it would be made "perfectly clear" that youths participating in the sport who are found with a gun on campus would be treated like any other student.
McCall said he doesn't expect offering trap shooting as a sport to cut into other programs.
"That should not be an issue and actually, I think it could increase our numbers, because I think we have kids in our school who like to do a lot of hunting and things like that, who are not in sports," McCall said. "And I think we could get more of our kids out."
