LAKEWOOD, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's Georgian Court University has installed its first male president in its 107-year history.

Joseph Marbach is also the first lay person to ever lead the Lakewood-based Catholic school. He formally assumed his new job on Friday, becoming the university's ninth president.

Marbach had been named in April to succeed Sister Rosemary Jeffries, who had been the school's leader for 14 years. He previously served as La Salle University's provost and academic affairs vice president.

The married Florence resident has three children.

Georgian Court was founded by the Sisters of Mercy on an estate that once belonged to financier George Jay Gould. The formerly all-female school became coeducational in 2013. It had 1,621 undergraduate and 687 graduate students in the fall semester.
