LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — A new volunteer program offered by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office is offering support to inmates with mental illnesses.
Sixteen community volunteers and about 30 inmates currently are involved in the Community Navigator Program. Jennifer Uhl of Tippecanoe County Jail tells WLFI-TV (http://bit.ly/1OwfmG0 ) that the program is a resource for inmates with all kinds of mental illnesses, including anxiety, depression and addiction.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Barry Richard says the program offers both spiritual and practical support to inmates.
He says the main goal is to help participants re-enter the community and become responsible citizens.
