DETROIT (AP) — Former U.S. Rep. John Dingell, the longest-serving member of Congress in U.S. history, is having a pacemaker placed in his heart.
Dingell's wife, U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, gave an update Thursday on Facebook. She says the procedure was being performed a day ahead of schedule.
Debbie Dingell says her 89-year-old husband is in "very good spirits" at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. A pacemaker can help control abnormal heart rhythms.
John Dingell, a Democrat, served 59 years in Congress. His wife was elected to his Detroit-area seat last year after he didn't seek re-election.
