HUNTINGTON PARK, Calif. (AP) — An intense fire is burning in a metal-clad commercial building near downtown Los Angeles, sending up giant plumes of dark smoke that are visible for miles around.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the blaze broke out around 9 a.m. Monday at the one-story building in Huntington Park, a small city just south of downtown LA.

The building was wilting under the force of the flames, and the metal that made up much of it was giving off noxious black smoke.

Surrounding buildings were evacuated.

Firefighters had retreated into defensive mode to fight the fire from a distance. Fire officials say one was taken to a hospital for evaluation, but had no further details.

It wasn't immediately clear what business occupies the building or what caused the fire.
