COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Hundreds of people have been rescued from fast-moving floodwaters in South Carolina. Days of driving rain hit a dangerous crescendo Sunday that buckled buildings and roads, closed a major East Coast interstate route and is threatening the drinking water supply for the capital Columbia. Officials say with so much water, it could take weeks or even months to assess every road and bridge that's been closed around the state. Also closed is a 75-mile stretch of Interstate 95, a key route connecting Miami to Washington, D.C. and New York.

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — Aircraft and ships are searching off the Bahamas islands for a U.S. cargo ship that lost contact during Hurricane Joaquin (wah-KEEN'). Searchers have found more debris and clues but no definitive word on the fate of the vessel or the 33 people on board. The owner of the 790-foot El Faro says a container believed to have come from the ship was found. Searchers have also spotted an oil sheen and have found a life ring from the ship.

BEIJING (AP) — A typhoon that tore through the northern Philippines before roaring ashore in southern China has killed at least nine people and left dozens of fishermen missing. Authorities say the typhoon also prompted several strong tornadoes when it landed in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong on Sunday, killing at least six people and injured 168 people. The official Xinhua (shihn-wah) News Agency says one fisherman also was killed and 16 others are reported missing in China.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia has shut most schools nationwide for two days to protect children from a thick noxious haze caused by smoke from burning forests in neighboring Indonesia. The poor visibility forced several airports to be closed for hours on Sunday. And a popular annual marathon in Kuala Lumpur was also canceled. Malaysia's deputy prime minister says Indonesia's efforts to crack down on the sources of open burning by farmers are not enough.

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A district attorney's office in suburban New York says it barred prosecutors from keeping handguns, even at home, out of safety. Nassau County's DA loosened the policy last week, but still prohibits prosecutors from carrying guns at work. The office says carrying guns could be dangerous in a job known for sensitive, unpredictable situations. But an upstate New York DA is offering to pay for his prosecutors to apply for gun permits because their jobs are so dangerous.
