MIAMI (AP) — Bermuda's weather service has issued a warning ahead of hurricane Joaquin's arrival, expected sometime Sunday morning. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Joaquin remains an "extremely dangerous," Category 4 storm heading on a northeastward path. Residents in the Bahama's have begun cleaning up and the U.S. Coast Guard plans to resume the search for a missing cargo ship.
BEIJING (AP) — A strong typhoon is bearing down on southern China forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate coastal areas. China's weather service has forecast as much as 11 inches of rain in some places from Sunday morning to Monday morning. More than 60,000 fishing boats have returned to port and more than 40,000 fishermen working on fish farms have moved to shelters.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Rain and flood warnings remain in effect for many parts of the East Coast through Sunday. Parts of the East Coast have seen record-setting rain that shut down roads, waterlogged crops and showed little sign of letting up. Coastal communities as far north as New Jersey were feeling the effects of unrelenting rainfall. At least five weather-related deaths have been reported. President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency in South Carolina.
BLOOMINGTON, Calif. (AP) — The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says a man is in custody on suspicion of killing a woman in a mobile home park. Police say they received reports of a naked man running through the park covered in blood and that the man was apparently hit by a car. When deputies arrived at the crash scene, they determined the injured man was the suspect. Victor Sanchez has been booked for investigation of murder.
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities says they haven't reached a conclusion yet about a drive-by shooting on a Phoenix freeway. Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Raul Garcia says a man in a tan pickup truck pulled alongside another vehicle and fired multiple shots. No one was hurt and the pickup exited the freeway a short time later. Police are investigating whether the shooting is related to a string of recent shootings or is an isolated incident.
