PHOENIX (AP) — The former chairman of the Arizona Board of Regents is stepping down from his role on the board overseeing the state's three public universities.
Regent Mark Killian announced his resignation on Tuesday.
Killian criticized university funding cuts approved by Gov. Doug Ducey earlier this year while serving as chairman of the 12-member board. Ducey apparently had no hard feelings, appointing Killian in April to head the state agriculture department.
Killian had more than two years left on his eight year-term but said his agriculture department job was preventing him from dedicating enough time to his regents office.
Current regents chairman Jay Heiler praised Killian for being a "tireless public servant and ... a passionate champion for accessible public education in Arizona."
Killian is a former speaker of the Arizona House.
