CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Officials say the state of New Hampshire has lost out on a federal grant designed to boost the amount of charter schools across the country.

New Hampshire Public Radio reports (http://bit.ly/1PLDlQo ) officials were informed Monday that New Hampshire was not among the eight states selected for the $5.4 million, five-year U.S. Department of Education grant.

New Hampshire was one of 27 states to apply for the grant, offered to help charter schools with startup costs.

The state received $11.6 million in funding for charter schools in 2010, but the grant expired in July.

Officials say the state has only about $600,000 left for new schools.

There are currently 25 charter schools operating in New Hampshire.
