ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (AP) — Sweetwater County Recreation Board members are not wild about an offer to take over the Firehole Campground at Flaming Gorge Reservoir from the U.S. Forest Service, saying it may be too expensive.
The U.S. Forest Service owns the campground, which is managed on a concessionaire agreement with Pleasant Grove, Utah-based American Land and Leisure. The site has a Forest Service managed boat marina.
The company is a private contractor that cares for more than 400 National Forest, Pacific Gas & Electric and state park campgrounds throughout the United States. Its Forest Service campgrounds are operated under a special use permit. The company did not return a phone call Saturday seeking comment.
The Forest Service pitched the idea to the Sweetwater County Commission of the recreation board taking over management and care of the campground.
"Personally, I feel there's no way. I just don't see us running a boat ramp or a campground," said board President Keaton West.
He said it would take several hundred thousand dollars to fix it.
West said the campground has not been making enough money off user fees to make upkeep and staffing worthwhile.
"If we had an extra million dollars a year we could keep it up," said board member Matthew Backstrom.
West said it's up to commissioners to decide if they want it, the Rock Springs Rocket-Miner reported (http://tinyurl.com/pllc8a8 ).
