Francis heads to New York...More than 700 dead in hajj crush...Stocks finish lower

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pope Francis has left Washington for New York City, after delivering a message to Congress calling for compassion for immigrants. Francis also urged lawmakers to act against climate change, and he called for outlawing the death penalty -- adding that life should be protected in all of its stages. He also voiced fears that the very basis of marriage and family life is being put into question. Among those hearing him speak were four justices from the Supreme Court that legalized same-sex marriage.

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (AP) — Saudi officials say the death toll from the horrific crush of Muslim pilgrims today stands at 719. But they say the number will probably rise as bodies continue to be counted. Iranian state TV says 131 Iranian pilgrims were among those killed in the crush of people on the outskirts of Mecca. It happened as about two million Muslims take part in the annual hajj pilgrimage.

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle fire chief says four people died at the scene of a crash involving a charter bus, an amphibious tour vehicle and two passenger cars. The chief says 12 others were critically hurt. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray says there were foreign students on the charter bus. He calls the accident a "terrible tragedy."

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio says GOP front-runner Donald Trump is "touchy and insecure." The Florida senator jabbed the real estate mogul during an interview with a Kentucky radio show today (on Kentucky Sports Radio). Rubio said Trump's debate performance last week exposed his weaknesses to voters. Trump called Rubio a "lightweight" yesterday and criticized his foreign policy experience. Rubio fired back today, saying Trump is "not really well informed on the issues" and relies on attacking people.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are closing lower as traders worry again about slowing global growth. The Dow lost 78 points. The S&P fell six, and the Nasdaq declined 18 points.
