MCKINNEY, Texas (AP) — Police in North Texas fatally shot a man after they say he held a woman and child captive and fired a handgun at officers.

McKinney police officer Sabrina Boston said in a statement the shooting happened Wednesday night in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the Dallas suburb.

She says police received a report of a woman and child being held against their will in a van. Officers found the van and attempted to take the suspect into custody.

Police say a struggle ensued and the suspect produced a handgun and shot at officers. The officers returned fire, killing the man. He was later identified as 35-year-old Joseph Khammash of McKinney.

Boston says the woman and child were not injured.

Khammash's relationship to the two wasn't immediately clear.
