MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) — A new wildfire in Northern California has killed one person and destroyed or damaged 10 homes in Monterey County. Farther north, two other blazes have killed five people and destroyed at least 1,400 homes.
EAST SELMA, Ala. (AP) — A man has been charged with three counts of attempted murder after opening fire at a church in East Selma, Alabama. Authorities say James Junior Minter shot and wounded his girlfriend, their baby and a clergyman. The victims are reported in stable condition.
PHOENIX (AP) — Investigators say they have proof a gun owned by the suspect in the Phoenix freeway shootings wasn't in hock at the time of the shootings. The suspect, Leslie Allen Merritt Jr., has said his gun had been sitting in a pawn shop for months. He's being held on $1 million bail.
HAVANA (AP) — Pope Francis is finishing his day in Cuba with an evening vespers service in the San Cristobal Cathedral and a meeting with Cuban young people. The pope will be spending one more day in Cuba before heading to Washington D.C. on Tuesday.
ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The left-wing Syriza (SEER'-ih-zah) party has won Greece's third national vote this year. It's a resounding success for Alexis Tsipras (TSEE'-prahs), who resigned as prime minister in order to face down an in-party rebellion over his decision to accept painful austerity measures in exchange for an international bailout.
