STORRS, Conn. (AP) — Two people killed when a car collided with a tractor trailer have been identified as University of Connecticut students.

UConn spokeswoman Stephanie Reitz said Sunday the victims were sophomores Alana Ferrente and Ryan Meegan. She said both "were held in the highest regard by all who knew them."

The crash happened Friday afternoon in Columbia, a few miles from UConn's campus in Storrs. Reitz said a third UConn student was injured, but did not release details.

Ferrente was a pre-kinesiology major who recently transferred from Central Connecticut State University. Meegan was a pre-teaching major and a mentor in UConn's First Year Experience program.

Reitz said UConn extends "our deepest sympathies" to their families and friends.
