PHOENIX (AP) — The man arrested in four of the Phoenix freeway shootings has told a judge during his first court appearance that authorities have "the wrong guy." Police say Leslie Allen Merritt Jr. shot four cars on Aug. 29 and 30 on Interstate 10 in Phoenix, and they have forensic evidence linking his gun to the shootings. But the 21-year-old landscaper told the judge he had no access to his gun because it's been in a pawn shop for two months. The judge set bail at $1 million.
MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) — Two large and deadly wildfires in California are now blamed for five deaths and the loss of more than 1,100 homes. Damage inspection teams have found 250 more homes burned by a Sierra Nevada fire, bringing the total to 503. A separate blaze in Lake County, about 170 miles to the northwest, has destroyed nearly 600 homes and burned hundreds of other structures.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is calling for a "political revolution" to end corporate greed. The Vermont senator also slammed the GOP field on climate change, gay marriage and foreign policy in a speech that drew raucous applause at the New Hampshire Democratic Party's annual convention.
BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Migrants are pouring into Austria via the Hungarian border. Officials say they are expecting 10,000 new arrivals today. Meanwhile, Hungary's foreign minister is lashing out at neighboring Croatia for sending migrants across the border into Hungary "without any kind of prior permission." He also says Croatia violated European Union rules that require EU countries to register asylum-seekers upon arrival.
ZAATARI REFUGEE CAMP, Jordan (AP) — The United Nations' humanitarian chief says the international community has sent "record amounts" of aid to alleviate the fallout from the Syria crisis, but it's hard to keep up with rising regional needs. Stephen O'Brien spoke today as he toured Jordan's largest camp for Syrian refugees. Growing numbers of Syrian refugees have been heading to Europe or returning to Syria in recent weeks, in part because underfunded aid agencies have had to slash support programs.
