ILLAPEL, Chile (AP) — Thousands of residents of the Chilean city of Illapel (ee-YUH'-pehl) have been staying outside, after a powerful earthquake destroyed their homes. The magnitude-8.3 tremor killed at least eight people last night, forcing more than a million to evacuate. Several coastal towns were flooded from small tsunami waves set off by the quake.
HOUSTON (AP) — A hearing begins at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas today to decide whether former Taliban prisoner Bowe Bergdahl should be tried for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. The Army sergeant left his post in Afghanistan in 2009 and was captured by the Taliban. He was released five years later in exchange for five Taliban commanders being held at Guantanamo Bay.
WASHINGTON (AP) —President Obama is meeting today with the three young Americans who stopped a terror attack last month on a passenger train headed to Paris. U.S. Army Specialist Alek Skarlatos, U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone and Anthony Sadler wrestled to the ground the man authorities say is tied to radical Islam and was armed with two guns and a box cutter. The three Americans also received France's highest honor.
TOVARNIK, Croatia (AP) — Germany's vice chancellor is making a new appeal to other European countries to help shoulder the burden of the influx of migrants. Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel says in a video message that more EU countries need to agree to a mandatory redistribution of refugees. He says, "Germany is helping. The question is, who is helping Germany?" Meanwhile, some 2,000 migrants are packing a train station in eastern Croatia, waiting to board trains to the refugee centers in the country.
WEBBERVILLE, Mich. (AP) — Officials in Michigan say they've found the body of a worker missing after a grain storage building wall collapsed at an Archer Daniels Midland facility in Webberville. The company says the contractor's body was found early this morning following an all-night effort. Several crews were working near the building when the wall fell yesterday afternoon.
