MIDDLETOWN, Calif. (AP) — Scores of people are gathered at a high school in Northern California waiting to be escorted back to their homes to check on pets and farm animals after massive wildfires swept through the area. They're being allowed to go into their homes and yards for 15 minutes to feed and give water to the animals. The fire destroyed hundreds of homes, and thousands more are threatened.

GAUTIER, Miss. (AP) — Police in Mississippi say they are still searching for a motive in the case of a Delta State University instructor who is accused of killing his girlfriend and a colleague. Police say they believe Shannon Lamb killed his girlfriend, Amy Prentiss, at a home they shared in a small coastal town. They say there's no indication that drugs or alcohol played a role, and there was no history of domestic violence at the home. Lamb is also suspected of killing fellow Delta State professor Ethan Schmidt. He later took his own life. Police don't believe there was a relationship between the two victims.

HOUSTON (AP) — The two students killed in the crash of a school bus today in Houston are identified as a 17-year-old and a 14-year old girl. Two others who were aboard the bus are hospitalized, along with the driver. The bus plunged over a highway overpass after being hit by a car. School officials say the driver of that car was a Houston teacher, who was also injured.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle students could be in school by Thursday if striking teachers approve a tentative contract agreement. The deal was announced this morning, but teachers remained on the picket lines pending approval by the union. The teachers walked out Sept. 9 and delayed the start of the school year for 53,000 students.

ROSZKE, Hungary (AP) — The latest move by Hungary to seal off its borders and stop the flow of migrants into the country is being denounced by neighbors Serbia and Romania. Serbia's foreign minister says it's "unacceptable" that migrants are being sent back from Hungary, even as more and more are arriving from Macedonia and Greece. And Romania's Foreign Ministry says sealing the borders runs counter to the goals of the European Union.
