SAN JACINTO, Calif. (AP) — Humane society officials say a woman who refused to identify herself surrendered a 3-month-old tiger cub to the organization and said she found the animal roaming on the side of a road in the San Jacinto Valley.
The tiger was transferred to a sanctuary Friday.
Officials at the Forever Wild Exotic Animal Sanctuary in Phelan told the Riverside Press-Enterprise (http://cbsn.ws/1VCR6UX) that the male cub was recently declawed and needs surgery to repair the botched job.
Licenses to own tigers in California are only granted to zoos and sanctuaries.
Ramona Humane Society president Jeff Sheppard says he wants to find the mother of the cub. He says the organization once took in a wallaby but never a tiger.
