BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A breast milk bank has opened in Alabama to serve pre-term and hospitalized babies.

WBMA-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1UmzGyI ) the facility will collect breast milk from mothers, and then sterilize it.

The milk will then be sent to hospitals.

The director of the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama, Mary Kelley, said breast milk can help babies who are born too early from developing serious complications.

Before the milk bank opened, donations were sent to Texas for pasteurization and distribution.
