LAS VEGAS (AP) — Prison officials say a 78-year-old female inmate in prison for second-degree murder and attempted arson has died.
The Nevada Department of Corrections said Monday that Joan Corbyons had died the day before at the Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas.
Corbyons had been in prison since 2007 after pleading guilty to her role in a 2005 fire at her home that killed her 41-year-old daughter. She was serving a sentence of up to 25 years on the charges.
A parole commissioner's agenda shows she was due for a hearing on Aug. 26. A representative for the parole board says it can take two to three weeks for inmates to be given a decision.
Prison officials did not say how Corbyons died. The agency says an autopsy would be conducted.
