HOUSTON (AP) — Investigators in the Houston area believe they have solved the who but not the why of the death of a sheriff's deputy. A 30-year-old man is accused of shooting Darren Goforth multiple times as the 10-year veteran deputy was filling the gas tank of his patrol car. Authorities believe it was a targeted killing. Shannon J. Miles is charged with capital murder.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton joined in the 10-year anniversary commemoration of Hurricane Katrina by weighed into a debate that has bubbled up about whether New Orleans' story is one of a city resurrected or of people left behind. The recovery has been uneven with many neighborhoods — especially African-American ones — still struggling. Clinton said the city should be happy but resolve to keep working. People throughout the Gulf Coast marked the anniversary.
BATAVIA, N.Y. (AP) — A Western New York woman is charged with second-degree murder in the death of her baby girl and police say the mother lived with the body for three months. Christina Colantonio was arrested after a visiting acquaintance found the baby's body and called 911. Batavia police say they think Colantonio killed the girl "shortly after birth." Batavia is about 45 miles from Buffalo.
SEATTLE (AP) — Winds tore through much of the Pacific Northwest on Saturday, killing two people and knocking out electricity to nearly 500,000 customers. One victim's car was hit by a tree while a 10-year-old girl playing outside was hit with a falling limb.
MORRO BAY, Calif. (AP) — California resident Elinor Dempsey is a lucky surfer. She escaped injury on Saturday after a great white shark took a bite out of her surfboard off California's central coast. Dempsey says she pushed her board toward the shark as she jumped off while other surfers warned everyone else to get out of the water. Some of the surfers helped Dempsey. Officials put the beach on 72-hour closure.
