HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police say a suspect has been accused of assault after two people were shot while at a Texas Southern University dormitory parking lot.
Darrius T. Nichols was being held Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. City jail records didn't immediately list bond or an attorney to speak for the 20-year-old Nichols, who does not attend TSU.
Authorities are trying to determine what sparked Wednesday night's shootings. A woman, who's not a student, was treated and released. A man remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police are trying to determine if he attends TSU.
A TSU officer saw a gunman fire toward a crowd. The man refused to drop his gun and turned toward the officer, who shot at the suspect but missed.
The suspect surrendered.

This story has been corrected throughout to show the shootings happened at Texas Southern University, not Texas State University.
