This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.

The technology sector is a dynamic industry for the United States economy, and Utah is recognized as an important player. Salt Lake City ranks in the top 5 for markets with a tech talent base of less than 50,000. And a contributor to that industry is InnoSys in Salt Lake City.

Today InnoSys has high-profile clients and projects with the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy. They're providing smart lighting for homes and businesses. As an original design manufacturer, you won't see their name on most of their products, but you may have seen their work at hospitals, schools and offices, as florescent tube replacements. This minimizes the cost of upgrading lighting while saving on energy.

An example of a product InnoSys has created is energy-efficient replacement LED lighting. These are high-quality lights you can install and control affordably that will also reduce energy costs. The lights are dimmable, and one thing they can do is dim automatically on sunny days to save energy. In areas used less frequently, like stairwells, lobbies and parking garages, lights can include motion and sound sensors to consume less power if people aren't around.

Larry Sadwick, chief technology officer and co-founder, says InnoSys started out as a side project between himself and Dr. Jennifer Hwu, both professors at the University of Utah in the engineering department. First, they created high-frequency communication devices. This was a specialized market, so they later expanded into intelligent LED consumer lighting. Most of these products they've invented, with some based on projects Larry did for his students.

Up to this point, Larry says InnoSys has been operating behind the scenes, but they're currently working on releasing their own product line. These products are unique, and it's unlikely you'll see anything else on the market like them, so customer education is another important focus for this growing tech company.
