BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) — An upstate New York county health department has proposed a ban on electronic smoking devices in all public buildings.
The Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin reports (http://press.sn/1HRbeZU ) the proposal, submitted to the Broome County Legislature on Wednesday, would prohibit e-cigarettes and similar vaping products in areas where smoking is banned under the Clean Indoor Air Act.
If the proposal is passed, Broome County would be the 10th county in New York state to ban e-cigarettes, along with New York City's five boroughs.
Sharon Fischer, coordinator for the health department's Tobacco Free Broome and Tioga program, says new research shows the vapor emitted by e-cigarettes is harmful to the health of the smoker and those nearby.
Health Department Director Claudia Edwards says the ban would help in the campaign against youth smoking.
